XP531 - CONSTANTINE I(AD 307-337), AE Half Follis [1.42 gm. 1 & 1/2 Scripula ?], aVF/F+, $160

Obverse: IMP CONSTANTINVS PF AVG, right facing, bare headed bust of Constantine I.

Reverse: FVNDA(T) (PA)CIS, mars; helmeted, nude, advancing right, looking left, trophy across left shoulder, flying chlamys, dragging captive by the hair; RT in exergue.

Reference: RIC VII Rome #12 [R2], Unlisted in Sear, Unlisted in Van Meter.

Comments: A rare reverse type issued only in Rome and Trier. This Rome issue is typically lighter in wieght and is thought to be a Half-Follis in denomination. This seldom seen coin has an attractive highlighting patina on the obverse and a full set of features on the reverse. This coin is a must have for the serious Constantinian reverse type collector.

XP538 - CONSTANTINE I(AD 307-337), AE Follis [3.39 gm.], VF+/VF+, $90

Obverse: IMP CONSTANTINVS PF AVG, right facing, laureate helmeted, cuirassed, bust of Constantine I.

Reverse: VOT XX / MVLT / {dot}XXX{dot} in three lines, enclosed in full circular wreath; TS{dot}{gamma} in exergue.

Reference: RIC VII Thessalonica #28 [R3], Unlisted in Sear, Unlisted in Van Meter.

Comments: This coin exhibits nearly perfect centering as well as being nicely silvered. A tough to find piece in any condition, this one is a great reverse type collection centerpiece.

XP541 - CONSTANTINE I(AD 307-337), AE Follis [2.81 gm.], VF+/VF, $75

Obverse: CONSTANTI-NVS MAX AVG, right facing, laureate, bust of Constantine I.

Reverse: GLORIA EXERCITVS, Soldier [Constantine?] standing left, looking right, reversed spear in right hand, left hand on shield set on ground; Stylized S in left field, CONS in exergue.

Reference: RIC VII Constantinople #22 [R3], Sear #3875, Van Meter #81.

Comments: A very nice example of this less common reverse type. A bit of original silvering remains in the recesses of this coin. Minor striking weakness at 9 o'clock does not detract from this coin's eye-appeal. The old flip indicates that this coin is ex-CNG 37 lot #1958.

XP535 - CONSTANTINE I(AD 307-337), AE3, VF+/VF+, $60

Obverse: CONSTAN-TINVS AVG, right facing, helmeted, cuirassed, bust of Constantine I.

Reverse: BEATA TRAN-QVILLITAS, Globe set on altar inscribed VOT / IS / XX in three lines; above, three stars; PTR in exergue.

Reference: RIC VII Trier #303, Sear #3870-1v, Van Meter #74

Comments: Another great detailed portrait bust of Constantine I. Nice chocolate brown patina on this near perfectly centered coin.

XP303 - CONSTANTINE I (AD 307-337), AE3 - Siscia, EF/EF, $45

Obverse: CONSTAN-TINVS AVG, right facing, laureate head of Constantine I.

Reverse: DN CONSTANTINI MAX AVG, around laurel wreath with VOT / XX inscribed in two lines inside wreath. (gamma)SIS(sunrise mark) in exergue

Reference: RIC VII Siscia #180 (C2), Foss RHC #71a, Sear #3873v, Van Meter #79.

Comments: A very nice coin in remarkable condition, perfectly centered with a detailed portrait bust. Excellent obverse and reverse details on this coin. Light traces of original silvering remain on both sides. This coin is attributed to 321-322 timeframe during the 15th anniversary of his reign with vows for another 5 years. Also of interest is the unusual mintmarking using the image of a rising (setting?) sun.

XP305 - CRISPUS (as Caesar AD 317-326), AE3 of Trier, VF+/VF, $40

Obverse: IVL CRIS-PVS NOB C, right facing, laureate head of Crispus.

Reverse: CAESARVM NOSTRORVM, laurel wreath enclosing VOT / X in two lines, STR(crescent) in exergue.

Reference: Sear #3918, RIC VII Trier #440 (C3), Cohen #44, Foss RHC #14b, Van Meter #10

Comments: Check out the remarkable detail in the hair, laureate ties and leaves on the front of this coin. This coin is well struck and well centered on a slightly irregular flan. Only slightly weaker strike on reverse with no loss of legends. The VOT/X reverse refers to the 5th anniversary of Crispus as Caesar with vows for 5 additional years. This coin was minted during 321 at the time of his 2nd Consulate.

XP306 - CONSTANTINE II (As Caesar AD 317-337), AE3/4 of Trier, VF/VF+, $35

Obverse: CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C, right facing, laureate, draped, cuirassed, bust of Constantine II.

Reverse: GLOR-IA EXERC-ITVS, two soldiers standing facing, either side of two standards, outer hands supporting inverted spear, inner hands resting on shield, TR(dot)P in exergue.

Reference: RIC VII Trier #539 (C3), Sear #3951v, Van Meter #45.

Comments: An all around great coin of Constantine II. Large, well shaped flan with very nice strike and full legends. Excellent detail in the hair on obverse and standards and shields on the reverse. This coin might mark the transition to the AE3/4 (under 17 mm )die style on the previous AE3 (17+ mm) flan size. The bottom of both sides shows a slightly softer strike which limits the details in the cuirassing and mintmarking. A nice Gloria reverse type for your collection.

XP307 - CONSTANS as Augustus(AD 337-350), AE Half-Centenionalis (18mm) - Siscia, F+/F+, $27

Obverse: DN CONSTA-NS PF AVG, right facing, pearl diademed, draped, cuirassed, bust of Constans.

Reverse: FEL TEMP REPARATIO, Constans standing left on galley, holding phoenix standing on globe and labarum w/ chi-rho, Victory steering in stern, (gamma)SIS(A-shaped hook) in exergue.

Reference: RIC VIII Siscia #238 (C3), unlisted in Sear, Van Meter #67 .

Comments: Decent portrait bust of Constans with full legends and features despite the slightly porous surfaces of the flan. Some very nice details in the hair and diadem on obverse. A nice unlisted (Sear) piece.
